The Adventure
“Wow! It’s fabulous!” Dave exclaimed, gazing at his new apartment. It was a three-storey bungalow, complete with a mini swimming pool. He had bought the apartment at a shockingly cheap price. No matter how grand the house was, it was built right on top of a cemetery and the previous owners of the house had all disappeared mysteriously. According to rumours, the spirits of the people buried in the cemetery were awakened by the noises of the construction site when the house was built and have been haunting the house ever since.
Despite numerous warnings from family and friends, Dave was unfazed as he did not believe in “such nonsense”. That’s right, folks, he was a modern young man who was strictly a non-believer of the supernatural.
Dave’s eyes took in the spectacular furnishings of the house which was left behind by the previous owner of the house. An awesomely enormous chandelier, with sparkling crystals, gave off a warm yellow glow, which shone on the rich, violet carpet. Everything was clean, crisp and vibrant like the air after a spring sun shower. Dave smiled a small, satisfied smile. He knew that this was going to be his perfect home, imagining raising children, then grandchildren in it. Unfortunately, he did not know how wrong he was.
In stark contrast with all the grand things in Dave’s new apartment, there was a door. A plain, white, nondescript door that would not have caught Dave’s attention had the salesman not mention to him not ever to open it. Something odd was flashing momentarily in the salesman’s eyes when he said that. Dave decided that the salesman must be kidding him so he did not think much of the door…until one fateful night.
“Thud, thud!” An incessant knocking was heard. Groaning, Dave reluctantly peeled his eyes off his forty-two inch plasma television screen and trudged down the stairs. Much to his astonishment, Dave did not see anybody or anything outside his house door. “Thud, thud” The knocking began again. Dave raised his eyebrows and felt a vague pang of unease. He was still holding the house door open.
Dave shook his head vigorously and muttered that it was probably just his imagination. “Thud! Thud!” The knocks were heard again, harder than ever. It came from behind the plain, white, nondescript door.
Curiosity aroused, Dave inched closer to the door, the door that the salesman had warned him fearfully not to open. The pang of unease mutated into a sense of foreboding. Immediately, Dave felt himself being drawn towards the door, as if his life depended on him opening that door. Well, if he did not open the door, Dave would be safe and sound, probably with chubby children sitting on his lap, but he did.
Dave’s hand reached out suddenly for the doorknob as if by instinct. A simple twisting sound was heard, then the door was creaking open. A musty smell washed over him and Dave could see nothing but black. Cold, wet and icky blackness, not the lacklustre of a city night. That was strange as Dave lived not only in the city, but also in one of the most brightly-lit cities…
